Opus 5 pricing: $5 in, $25 out — and what that buys you.
Opus 5 keeps Opus 4.8's exact API price while claiming near-Fable-5 capability. That makes the pricing table unusually interesting right now:
| Model | Input / 1M | Output / 1M | In paid plans? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opus 5 | $5 | $25 | Yes — default on Max, strongest on Pro |
| Fable 5 | $10 | $50 | Max & Team Premium only (50% cap); Pro via usage credits |
| Opus 4.8 | $5 | $25 | Yes (superseded by Opus 5) |
| Sonnet 5 | $2 | $10 | Yes (promo pricing through Aug 31) |
Batch and cache pricing for Opus 5 hadn't been broken out in launch coverage at the time of writing — check Anthropic's pricing page for those tiers before budgeting automation.

The three budget takeaways
1 · On Pro, Opus 5 is the new ceiling — free. Since July 20, Fable 5 on Pro burns usage credits ($100 one-time, then $10/$50). Opus 5 is simply included. For most Pro workloads, "do I need Fable at all?" now has a cheaper default answer.
2 · On the API, agentic work just got a real flagship at half rate. Long-running agents that were priced out of Fable 5 can run Opus 5 at Opus 4.8 prices — with (per Anthropic) far less capability sacrifice than before.
3 · The mix still wins. Opus 5 for the hard steps, Sonnet 5 or an open-weight model for volume — the arithmetic that saves real money is combination-level. Our sister site runs that math weekly in the Field Guide, and the Max-or-credits calculator now includes the Opus 5 option.
