Opus 5 in Claude Code: the new daily driver.
With Opus 5 as the Max default and the strongest Pro model, it's now the model most Claude Code sessions will open with. What that changes in practice:
Defaults. On Max plans, new sessions default to Opus 5. On Pro, it's the strongest model available in the picker. You can switch models mid-session with the /model command.
Where Fable 5 still earns its rate (Max users): planning a gnarly refactor before a cheaper model executes it, reviewing a large diff, and unblocking a stuck debugging session. The pattern that keeps showing up in our testing: flagship for judgment, Opus 5 for the long middle, Sonnet 5 for the typing.
